How Purple Shampoo works

Purple shampoos are used to fight brassiness on blonde, gray and silver hair in between salon visits. They contain violet pigments which counteract and neutralize unwanted yellow tones, thereby making the hair’s tone cooler. They work well because purple is the opposite of yellow on the colour wheel.
Purple conditioners have also become popular as they continue the toning process and add moisture to the hair. In some cases, purple conditioners strengthen the hair as well. For customers who want deep conditioning (and in some cases strengthening and repair), purple masks are also available. Both purple conditioners and purple masks work the same way as purple shampoos with their violet pigmentation.
Purple shampoos (and their corresponding conditioners and masks) have become very popular over the past few years and almost all of our professional brands have them. Some of our most popular since we opened our first store in 2014 have included Milkshake Silver Shine, Redken Blondage, Amika Bust Your Brass, AG Care Sterling Silver and Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo.
Remember, you should also follow the specific directions on your shampoo, conditioner and hair masks because if you leave it on for too long, or if you use it too often, you may “overtone” and have purple hair instead of the shiny, cool blonde you are looking for.
